That topic explains in pretty clear. Find something like "<IMG SRC="$USER_AVATAR_URL$" BORDER="0">" in the post template and replace it with:

<?if($USER_AVATAR_URL$)?><IMG SRC="$USER_AVATAR_URL$" BORDER="0"><?else?> <IMG SRC="/noavatar.gif" BORDER="0"> <?endif?>

You can replace "/noavatar.gif" with a URL of the default avatar. If you won't, a file named "noavatar.gif" in your root folder will be used.

the code in Appearance of entries looked little bit-different... but everything works fine now

It doesn't work because you don't have a file named "noavatar.gif" uploaded. It's not there by default. Also your code will overwrite user-defined avatars.
